Pandemonium erupts during hearing of Pak N-scientist writ petition

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad, Jan 27, IRNA -- Pandemonium erupted during the hearing of
Pakistani nuclear scientists` case on Tuesday when the government
lawyer blamed the nuclear scientists of accumulating money by
transferring nuclear technology outside the country.
The Lahore High Court judge Justice Maulvi Anwarul Haq left the
court in Rawalpindi as the relatives of the scientists started
shouting `shame shame`.
The government lawyer Tariq Shamim told the court that he will
request for in-camera hearing if criticism of president and the army
was not ended.
Tariq Shamim said debriefing of the nuclear scientists is
continuing and if any one found guilty, he will be met with severe
action.
The government prosecutor said, "We can`t file the case against
the scientists before the completion of the investigation to avoid
their dismissal from service."
Lawyers of the nuclear scientists said that court has ordered the
ISI Headquarters to submit a reply in connection with the arrest of
nuclear scientists, but no action was taken.
They claimed it was evident that the government has handed over
many people to the FBI and `we suspect that the nuclear scientists
could have been shifted to any third country`.
The attorneys said that Dr. Abdul Qadir Khan and other scientists
are the assets of Pakistan and that the nuclear technology is the
deterrent of foreign aggression.
They said that the nuclear scientists are patriotic and requested
the court to issue the production order for the release of the
arrested nuclear scientists.
Judge Justice Maulvi Anwarul Haq said that the issue of nuclear
scientists are being discussed at open forums, but the court is
unaware what is happening outside the court and why the government is
reluctant to submit the reply in writing about the arrest and
debriefing of scientists to the court.
"It is an open court and the government should submit reply."
The court adjourned the hearing till Wednesday.
