Relatives of detained N-scientists criticise Pakistan minister

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Islamabad, Jan 22, IRNA - Relatives of Pakistan`s detained nuclear
scientists and officials on Thursday criticised Information Minister
Sheikh Rashid Ahmed`s alleged remarks about the scientists asking him
to "serve the interest of his nation instead of becoming the
pokesman of another country".
Addressing a news conference in Rawalpindi, the relatives claimed
that the information minister who is also Federal Cabinet spokesman
has insulted the national heroes.
Those who addressed the press conference were son of Brigadier
Sajawal, wife of Major Islamul Haq, daughter of Brigadier Tajwer,
daughter of Dr Manzoor and family members of Dr Nasim.
Dr Shafiq said the minister should stop "character assassination"
of his father. "My father has not committed any crime, but he has
served the country," he added.
He urged the government to allow the families of the scientists to
meet them.
Mrs Major Islamul Haq said that her husband was picked up from the
residence of Dr Qadeer Khan. "We don`t know the whereabouts of my
husband."
She asked the government to ensure the safety of her husband and
other scientists.
Sahiba Nazir said on the occasion that two army men entered their
house and dragged her father. "They arrested my father and took him
away within two minutes. We don`t know where he is."
She said her father was arrested hours after the death of her
grandmother.
"We are in a bad position for 50 days. We contacted the KRL chief
and he says he cannot do anything," she said asking the government to
tell the families about the duration of the debriefing.
Asim Farooqui told the press conference his father phoned the KRL
chairman and said that he was being monitored since Ramadan. He also
appealed the president and prime minister to honourably release all
the scientists.
