Pakistan to propose dates for talks with India
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Islamabad, Jan 19, IRNA -- Pakistan has decided to propose India two alternative dates - February 16 or 23 - for resumption of composite dialogue between the two countries, local press reported Monday. The decision to resume talks was taken during a recent meeting between Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf and Indian Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee. Though, both sides have agreed on peace process, but so far, the date, venue and agenda of the composite dialogue to settle their bilateral issues, including the Kashmir issue have not been finalised. Pakistan`s Foreign Minister Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri and his Indian counterpart Yashwant Sinha on Saturday, expressed their resolve to initiate talks from next month. The recent thaw culminated in one-on-one meeting between President Musharraf and Premier Vajpayee on the sidelines of the SAARC summit, which ended on February 6 in Islamabad. Experts believed the core issue of Kashmir had been impeding efforts for normalisation of bilateral relations between the two nations since their independence in August 1947. Islamabad and New Delhi have fought two of their three wars on Kashmir and were close to the fourth, following a terrorist attack on the Indian Parliament in December 2001. However, hectic efforts by the regional countries and the international community, defused the situation. MHA/TSH/210 End
