Special equipment in Musharraf car saves his life
IRNA
Islamabad, Dec 17, IRNA -- Authorities in Pakistan said on Wednesday that special equipment in President General Musharraf`s car saved his life in an apparent assassination attempt on Sunday last. The equipment jams remote control for one minute and at the distance of 100 meter on both side of President Musharraf`s car. Meanwhile sources said that President Musharraf visited the site of the blast Tuesday. General Musharraf, a key ally in the US-led war on al-Qaeda and Taliban, narrowly escaped an attack when a series of explosions ripped apart a bridge in Rawalpindi just after his motorcade passed by on Sunday. Pakistani authorities are questioning seven security personnel, including four policemen detailed to check the bridge. Shortly after the attack, Musharraf blamed the explosion on extremists, opposed to his support for the US-led coalition against military operation in Afghanistan. Reports suggest that Pakistani authorities have arrested ten people, including Afghans, in connection with the bomb attack Musharraf, but officials say they were arrested for suspected links with al-Qaeda and their Taliban allies. The suspects were arrested in Rawalpindi between the night of Monday and Tuesday from a house in Rawalpindi, which is located near Islamabad. An Interior Ministry statement has said these arrests were not related to bomb attack but related to al-Qaeda and Taliban. No one has claimed responsibility of the attack, but officials suspected the al-Qaeda network may be behind the weekend bid to kill Musharraf. /TSH/AH/210 End
