Pakistan re-elected member chemical weapon body

Islamabad, Oct 24, IRNA - Pakistan was re-elected Friday as a member of the Executive Council of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) for the term 2004-2006, official sources said. The election held at the 8th session of the Conference of the States Parties, currently in progress at the Hague (20-24 October 2003), Netherlands, said a Foreign Ministry statement. As one of the initial signatories to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) and since its ratification in 1997, Pakistan has been re-elected to the Executive Council without a break, it said. Besides Pakistan, Iran, Malaysia and Sri Lanka were the other countries elected Friday as members of the Executive Council against for four seats available to Asia. Pakistan has served as Vice Chairman of the Conference of the states Parties in 2002 and Vice Chairman of the Executive Council in 2001-2002. TK/TSH/211 End
