Minimum deterrence to be maintained, says Pak President

Islamabad, Oct 24, IRNA - Pakistani President General Pervez Musharra says Pakistan is following a policy of credible minimum deterrence in the conventional and unconventional fields. "The balance of power in South Asia would never be allowed to be disturbed," Pakistan`s chief of the army staff told army officers in southern Sindh Thursday. It has been quantified keeping in view respective force levels and would be maintained at all costs, local press quoted him as saying. "In view of Indian refusal to a meaningful dialogue for the resolution of disputes between India and Pakistan, including the core issue of Kashmir," he said, "it is this `no-win scenario` for India that is ensuring peace in the region". "Whenever there is an attempt to upset the balance of power, Pakistan will take steps to rectify it," President Musharraf added. The president spoke about various measures that had been taken for the modernization of the Pakistan`s armed forces, including the induction of main battle tank Al-Khalid, Augusta submarines and the JF-17 Thunder (Super 7) aircraft. He said that the focus was on self-reliance and indigenization of state-of-the-art weapons and equipment. TK/TSH/211 End
