INTRO: Pakistan says it has successfully tested a short-range nuclear-capable missile, just hours after rival India conducted a similar test. Ayaz Gul reports from Islamabad.

TEXT: The Pakistani missile, called Abdali, has a range of up to 200-kilometers. The surface-to-surface rocket is said to be capable of carrying nuclear weapons.

India tested a similar missile a few hours earlier. Officials in Islamabad say the Pakistani test was not done in reaction to the Indian missile.

Aziz Ahmed Khan is a Foreign Ministry spokesman.

/// KHAN ACT ///

Pakistan has test fired an Abdali missile today (Wednesday). We informed all our neighbors, including India about the test yesterday as required under the M-O-U (Memorandum of Understanding). The India test came as a surprise to us, we were not informed about it.

/// END ACT ///

Pakistan and India have fought three wars, and relations remain tense because of a dispute over the Kashmir region. Pakistan denies Indian allegations that it is fueling an armed insurgency in the mostly Muslim Kashmir. (SIGNED)
