Pakistan not to enter into nuclear arms race with India: Musharraf

ISLAMABAD, June 27 (APP) : Chief Executive General Pervez Musharraf Monday reiterated Pakistan will not enter into nuclear arms race with India and will never subject the nation to economic deprivation. "We would not enter into nuclear arms race with India and would never subject our people to economic deprivation," he said in unequivocal terms at the Silver Jubilee of the International Nathiagali Summer College on Physics and Contemporary needs. The function was arranged by Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission. Reiterating Islamabad's nuclear policy, the Chief Executive said Pakistan was forced in May 1998 to demonstrate its nuclear capability in response to multiple Indian nuclear tests. "The rationale behind our nuclear policy is purely security and we only want to maintain a minimum credible deterrence to deter any aggression against our homeland." He added, "Pakistan, unlike India does not harbour any ambitions of regional or global status. We fully support creation of a strategic self-restraint regime in the subcontinent and expect a positive response form our neighbour." However, he made it clear that security of Pakistan will remain, "paramount in our minds and hearts." Apart from achieving minimum deterrence capability, General Musharraf said the main thrust of Pakistan's nuclear programme is on peaceful applications.

Pakistan must not remain isolated from international science: Musharraf

ISLAMABAD, June 27 (APP) : Emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in the field of science, Chief Executive General Pervez Musharraf Monday said Pakistan must not remain isolated from the main stream of science. "We want to belong to the mainstream of science and development. Therefore, we must build bridges to the scientific community in the world," he said in his address to the 25th International Nathiagali Summer College on Physics and Contemporary Needs. The function was held under the auspices of Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC). The Chief Executive hoped the Summer College "will prove to be one such bridge to establish communications and to see what 's happening in the world of science elsewhere and seek inspiration from others. And, I do hope that the flow will not be entirely one-way." He paid glowing tributes to "our great and only Nobel Laureate Dr. Abdus Salam who was the originator as well as a passionate supporter of the international Nathiagali summer Colleges." The Chief Executive said all scientific research must be focused towards economic development of Pakistan. "It ought to be focused on the environmental requirement of Pakistan." Referring to Pakistan's nuclear policy, General Musharraf said the rationale behind Islamabad's nuclear policy is purely security and "we only want to maintain a minimum credible deterrence to deter any aggression against our homeland." Pakistan, he said, unlike India does not harbour any ambitions of regional or global status. "We would not enter into nuclear arms race with India and would never subject our people to economic deprivation. We fully support creation of a strategic self-restraint regime in the subcontinent and expect a positive response form our neighbour."
