Chances of full scale war with India remote : CE

ISLAMABAD, June 15 (APP) : Chief Executive General Pervez Musharraf has stated that chances of a full-scale war between Pakistan and India are remote as Pakistan has a strong deterrent capability. "The chances of war are very remote because of the strong deterrent capability Pakistan possesses both in conventional and non-conventional arms," General Musharraf told Gulf News in an interview at the end of his two-day visit to Oman. The Chief Executive said, Pakistan remains a responsible nuclear state, concentrating on defence. Replying to a question whether Indian Prime Minister Vajpayee owed his re-election to the Kargil issue, he said "that could be partially true, thanks to the media manipulation which converted a failure and fiasco into success and triumph." The Chief Executive said India knows the amount of loss it has suffered at Kargil." Their losses and damages were huge." "It is a big massive national military cover up," he said, stating that India has shown "double insincerity". "Number one, they don't want to initiate a dialogue and number two, they are not keen to resolve the issue, calling Kashmir an integral part of India in the same breath." In response to a question about Vajpayee's being so friendly with deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif he said "Nawaz Sharif compromised on national interest - I don't.

Nawaz Sharif put the Kashmir issue on the backburner - and that is what brought him closer to Vajpayee." On US President Bill Clinton's recent visit to South Asia General Musharraf said, it "has not achieved much in lessening the tension, but it certainly has brought Kashmir into sharp focus and highlighted the dire necessity for a dialogue between Pakistan for a dialogue between Pakistan and India." In reply to a question about Osama bin Laden, General Musharraf said, "We would certainly like to assist the US in resolving the issue, but we have made it clear that we can't be held responsible for this task. The US needs to engage the Taliban directly and we certainly will be willing to assist them." Pakistan, he said, is in no hurry to sign the CTBT and will evolve a national consensus on the issue. "It is rather premature to address the issue at this moment.I have highlighted the fact that it is not Pakistan's signature which would bring CTBT into effect. There is no need for haste." About Nawaz's trial, the Chief Executive said, "They have defrauded Pakistan, they have looted our money, they have looted banks, they have nothing to say, so, this is the best course of action for them."
