Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)

TRANSCRIPT OF THE PRESS BRIEFING
ADDRESSED BY FOREIGN OFFICE SPOKESMAN
ON 23 MAY 2000

...........

When his comments were sought on media reports that India was preparing to conduct another round of nuclear tests, and that Pakistan's Foreign Secretary's visit to Beijing was also in connection with Pakistan's preparation for more nuclear tests, the Spokesman said:

We have seen the reports. The speculation that Pakistan is preparing to conduct further tests is baseless. Our nuclear policy is based on the maintenance of credible minimum deterrence. Pakistan has declared a unilateral moratorium on further testing. Should India conduct further tests, Pakistan will act according to what is best for safeguarding its security. The purpose of the Foreign Secretary's visit to Beijing is bilateral consultations. The speculation that he has gone to China in connection with Pakistan's preparations for more nuclear tests is completely unfounded.
