Text: State Department Issues Public Announcement on Pakistan
(Warns of possible kidnapping between March 31 and April 6) (250) The State Department late March 31 released a public announcement saying that the American Consulate General in Karachi had released a message indicating that the American Embassy in Islamabad had information "regarding a possible kidnapping of an American in or around Karachi between March 31 and April 6. "Although the information is unconfirmed," the announcement said, "it is prudent for all Americans to review their security practices." Following is the State Department text: (begin text) PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE Office of the Spokesman Pakistan March 31, 2000 On March 31 the American Consulate General in Karachi released a message with the following information to American citizens in the local community: "The United States Embassy in Islamabad has information regarding a possible kidnapping of an American in or around Karachi between March 31 and April 6. Although the information is unconfirmed, it is prudent for all Americans to review their security practices, particularly being aware of their surroundings and varying their travel times and routes."
