VOICED AT:
INTRO: A powerful bomb tore through a crowded mosque
killing at least six people and injuring about 14
others in central Karachi. As correspondent Scott
Anger reports from Karachi, hundreds of people have
died in recent years in terrorist attacks and ethnic
violence in Pakistan's largest city and commercial
center.
TEXT: The bomb exploded in a mosque as worshipers
knelt in prayer Friday, the Muslim holy day. Rescue
personnel rushed to the scene to care for the injured,
who have been transported to local hospitals.
No one has claimed responsibility for the blast.
Mohammed Azim Daud Pota, the provincial governor,
condemned the violence and blamed the bombing on -
what he called - cross border terrorism aimed at
trying to discredit Pakistan's military government.
Pakistani officials routinely blame intelligence
agents from neighboring India for violent acts that
occur in the country.
The mosque bombing followed a small explosion in
another area of the city, which left a policeman and
three bystanders slightly injured.
Hundreds of people have been killed in the violence
that has plagued Karachi for the last two decades.
