VOICED AT:
INTRO: A key U-S senator has urged archrivals India
and Pakistan to resume talks to settle their long-
standing dispute over the Himalayan region of Kashmir.
Senator Sam Brownback made the remarks at the end of a
trip to the two South Asian nations in Islamabad,
Monday. From the Pakistani capital, Ayaz Gul reports.
TEXT: Senator Brownback, chairman of the senate
foreign relations subcommittee on South Asian affairs,
describes Kashmir as one of the most tense regions of
the world. He says the two countries must resume
stalled talks to help solve the long-standing dispute.
/// BROWNBACK ACT //
The situation to me is very tense now between
India and Pakistan and needs to de-escalate. In
the Kashmir region it's just very tense area. I
am calling on both sides to de-escalate those
tensions and begin close discussions of all
issues. Those need to take place.
/// END ACT //
In recent years, several rounds of talks between India
and Pakistan on Kashmir have failed to settle the 50-
year old dispute. The countries have fought two wars
over the Himalayan region and came close to a third
war last summer, after Pakistan-backed forces captured
territory in Indian Kashmir. India controls two-
thirds of Kashmir and Pakistan the rest.
Senator Brownback's visit to Pakistan follows a two-
day visit by four other U-S senators last week. This
Thursday, U-S Assistant Secretary of State Karl
Inderfurth will visit Pakistan. He is the highest U-S
official to visit the country since the democratically
elected government was ousted in a bloodless military
coup in October. (SIGNED)
