INTRO: In Pakistan, at least eight people were killed
and more than two dozen others injured today (Monday)
after a powerful blast tore through a crowded street
in the southern port city of Karachi. From Pakistan,
correspondent Scott Anger reports.
TEXT: Police say a time bomb hidden in a fruit cart
exploded near a bus stop in a busy neighborhood in the
southern section of Karachi. Panic followed the blast
as residents of the neighborhood rushed to help the
wounded, using taxis and private vehicles to transport
the injured to nearby hospitals.
The powerful explosion shattered windows in area shops
and destroyed a number of vehicles.
Bomb disposal experts at the scene say at least one
kilogram of explosive material was used in the attack,
which left a large crater in the street.
No one has claimed responsibility for the blast.
Hundreds of people have died in recent years in
terrorist attacks and ethnic violence in Karachi,
Pakistan's largest city and commercial center.
