VOICED AT:
INTRO: Pakistan's ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif
is scheduled to appear Monday in an anti-terrorism
court in Karachi. Mr. Sharif and his six co-
defendants are facing charges stemming from their
alleged involvement in events that led to October's
military coup in Pakistan. From Islamabad, Ayaz Gul
reports.
TEXT: Nawaz Sharif and his aides continue to make
regular appearances in the court to face charges of
criminal conspiracy, attempted murder, and hijacking.
In addition, the military regime has accused the
deposed Prime Minister of waging war against the
country. Some of the charges against Mr. Sharif carry
the death penalty and life in prison.
In its last hearing, the court delayed the formal
laying of charges against Mr. Sharif to give
prosecution and defense lawyers time to settle a
dispute over evidence in the case. The judge has
asked both sides to bring experts to examine recorded
evidence.
Earlier, prosecutors said they could not provide
copies of audio recordings made by an in-flight
recorder to the defense, as ordered by the judge.
The charges against the ousted Prime Minister stem
from an alleged attempt to divert the plane bringing
General Pervez Musharraf back to Karachi from Sri
Lanka on October 12th. Hours after the General's
return he deposed Mr. Sharif in a bloodless coup and
established military rule.
General Musharraf has declared himself chief executive
of the country.
Mr. Sharif has repeatedly denied the allegations and
says General Musharraf is carrying out a personal
vendetta. (SIGNED)
