VOICED AT:
INTRO: A powerful bomb has killed at least nine
people and injured 20 others in the Pakistan-
controlled part of Kashmir. Ayaz Gul reports from
Islamabad, local officials are blaming India for the
blast, which they are calling a "subversive act."
TEXT: Police in Pakistani Kashmir say the bomb
exploded in a crowd watching a street entertainer in a
small town (Islamgarh), 140 kilometers south of the
regional capital, Muzafarabad. Witnesses say five
people died on the spot. The injured were taken to a
hospital, where some are said to be in critical
condition. Police say most of the victims are teen-
age boys.
Friday's attack was the second explosion in a week on
the Pakistani side of Kashmir. On Tuesday, a bomb
explosion on a bus injured six people.
No one is claiming responsibility, but the regional
police chief, Mohammed Asrar, made it clear he blames
India for the attack.
/// ASRAR ACT ///
The investigations are in progress, but one
thing I must say that the enemy [India] agents
are behind the incident and all other sabotage
activities going on in this part of Kashmir.
/// END ACT ///
The Kashmir region is divided between India and
Pakistan, and the two countries have fought two wars
over Kashmir since gaining independence from Britain
in 1947. Both New Delhi and Islamabad accuse each
other of sponsoring cross-border terrorist acts.
