INTRO: In Pakistan, plans are reportedly being
finalized for the establishment of an interim
government after a military coup this week. As V-O-
A's Scott Anger reports, there has been no official
word on how Pakistan's military plans to run the
country since overthrowing the democratically-elected
prime minister and declaring a state of emergency.
TEXT: Pakistan's state-run news agency says General
Pervez Musharraf and his commanders are finalizing
plans for the establishment of - what it calls - an
efficient and impartial interim political setup. The
military says the aim is to ensure a stable and
credible government with full accountability.
General Musharraf has been conducting a number of
meetings with military commanders since deposing Prime
Minister Nawaz Sharif in a bloodless coup Tuesday.
The ousted prime minister and a number of his
ministers are being held by the military at an
undisclosed location.
On Thursday, General Musharraf declared a state of
emergency, suspended the constitution, parliament and
provincial governments. The general has named himself
chief executive of Pakistan.
The military says General Musharraf will address the
nation once all details regarding Pakistan's new
government are finalized. (SIGNED)
