PAKISTAN EXPRESS SERIOUS CONCERN
WITH INDIA'S MISSILE PRODUCTION

Islamabad - A Foreign Office spokesman on September 29 expressed serious concern over reports that India had commenced regular production of Prithvi missiles.

"India's decision is bound to escalate tension and add to the deterioration of the security climate in the area," the spokesman said.

The production of the Prithivi -- capable of carrying nuclear warheads -- represented a qualitative change in the fragile security situation of the region, he said.

The spokesman expressed regret that while Pakistan was pushing for confidence-building measures, including a zero-missile regime in South Asia, and had also offered a non-aggression pact to India, New Delhi had responded with the induction of sophisticated missile systems.

He said the timing of the announcement of these military programs coinciding with the announcement of India's candidature for a permanent Security Council seat was curious.

"Adherence to the charter of the United Nations and respect for Security Council resolutions rather than military might should be the criteria in this campaign," he said.
