NA POLICY: The Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Mr. Muhammad Siddique Khan Kanju has declared that our successful tests have achieved the objectives of nuclear deterrence and Pakistan is determined to maintain it.

He was making an opening statement on the eve of debate on foreign policy in the National Assembly Monday night.

He said Pakistan no longer requires further tests to prove its capability and accordingly it has announced a unilateral moratorium on further testing.

The Minister said the CTBT is an important issue and asked the members to give their opinions on the subject so as to guide the government.

He assured the House that as a sovereign State, we alone will determine our course of action. We will maintain the nuclear deterrence that we have already established.

Mr.Siddique Khan Kanju pointed out that following nuclearization of South Asia, the great challenge lies in removing the root cause of the problems in the region. He said major powers must engage effectively to find a settlement of the Kashmir problem.

He said Pakistan is committed to a serious and comprehensive dialogue with India that address all issues.

He said Pakistan will continue to provide political, diplomatic and moral support to the Kashmiri people until they are able to exercise their right to self-determination as per UN resolutions.

Referring to Afghanistan, Mr. Kanju said Pakistan was genuinely interested in restoration of peace in that country. It will continue to promote the peace process in support of the UN and OIC efforts in this direction.

About US missile attacks inside Afghanistan and Sudan he said Pakistan had told the United States that instead of resorting to military action against sovereign states it should have opted for dialogue and consultation.

Mr. Kanju said our foreign policy is based on the promotion of regional peace and stability. He said there was a need for a unified national endeavour to achieve our objectives and aspirations of safeguarding our national security and territorial integrity.
