Clinton Will ask Congress to
Repeal Sanctions on Pakistan
WASHINGTON, DC Aug 20 (APP): President Clinton is going to ask the Congress
to repeal all such laws, including Symington and Pressler Amendments, that
impose sanctions on Pakistan. The was disclosed by the Assistant Secretary
of State for South Asia, Karl Inderfurth on Tuesday night while talking
to APP. Karl Inderfurth told APP that he is optimistic about Pakistan's
economic future. He said that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's economic policies
and austerity measures are very much in line with the IMF conditionalities.
US Asisstant Secretary of for South Asia Karl Inderfurth said that Pakistan
is a strategic and crucial state for the United States. He said that the
United States that has longstanding friendly relations with Pakistan, wants
to see Pakistan safe and prosperous. Inderfurth said that the United States
would not ask from Pakistan anything that may undermine its security. He
said no conditions that may hamper Pakistan's security would be attached
to any U.S. support and assistance. The United States understands Pakistan's
security concerns and will support Pakistan to face its security and economic
challenges. In responds to a question on the recent travel advisory for
U.S. citizens and the "evacuation" of non-essential personnel
from American diplomatic offices in Pakistan, Inderfurth said that the
decision was based on U.S. intelligence reports that American officials
and property there may be targeted.
