Joint Pakistan-US Press Statement at the end of US Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbot's visit to Pakistan, 21-23 July 1998
The Foreign Secretary of Pakistan, Shamshad Ahmad and Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbott held discussions in Islamabad on 21, 22 and 23 July, 1998. Mr. Talbott also met with Prime Minister Mr. Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and Foreign Minister Gohar Ayub Khan.
Mr. Talbotts visit to Islamabad is part of the ongoing dialogue and constructive engagement between Pakistan and the United States on the entire range of bilateral relations and security issues of concern to the two sides. The discussion in Islamabad has been a continuation of the meetings held by Foreign Secretary Mr. Shamshad Ahmad in Washington three weeks ago.
The two sides discussed the regional and global dimensions of the security situation in the aftermath of the May nuclear tests, Non-proliferation, Arms Control, the situation in Jammu and Kashmir and confidence building measures. They also discussed the current economic and financial circumstances in Pakistan. In that context, the US expressed support for the success of the impending mission of the International Monetary Fund. The two sides also attached considerable importance to the forthcoming meeting between Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Prime Minister Vajpayee in Colombo. The talks were both substantive and constructive.
The United States and Pakistan have agreed to continue the discussions in the later part of August.
