Defence Committee of the Cabinet under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister reviewed the current situation particularly in the framework of the security and strategic considerations; the meeting was attended by the three Services Chiefs and the Ministers for Finance and Interior besides senior officials; before the DCC meeting, COAS and Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee had a one-hour session with the Prime Minister on security issues. (Nation). The meeting also firmed up that the decision on CTBT would be made in the national interest. (N. Waqt). DCC resolves not to accept pressure on CTBT. (News). Following mounting pressure by the US and the western countries on the issue of signing CTBT, Pakistan has decided to take its friendly countries into confidence. (Pakistan). DCC meeting decided in principle to sign the CTBT, it is learnt from the competent sources. (Khabrain).

Pakistan will decide whether to sign the CTBT or not after talks with the US and India, diplomatic sources said. (News).

Raja Zafarul Haq says, IMF and World Bank are pressurizing Pakistan to sign CTBT. (News/APP).

The Prime Minister has convened the meeting of the Federal Cabinet in Islamabad tomorrow wherein latest economic situation of the country would be discusses. (Pakistan).

The Prime Minister while addressing a briefing regarding the National Highways has said, the government will continue its efforts for development and expand the existing network of reads and highways. (Pak. Observer).

Sartaj Aziz called on the Prime Minister at the PM's House July 17, 98 and discussed different matters including the country's economic situation. (N. Waqt/Jang). Says, the inclusion of defaulters' names on the exit control list has proved very useful. (N.Waqt).

The Finance Ministry has rejected the recommendation of the State Bank to give the bank managers magisterial powers to help them recover the defaulted loans. (Muslim).

Ejazul Haq says, the government after satisfying all the four provinces will construct Kalabagh Dam; those making the dam a political issue are the elements who were rejected by the people. (Pakistan).

Sindh Governor says, services of Armed Forces can be utilized for internal security; rangers have been given lists of terrorists; terrorists are found in every party and due to fear of operation, they have gone under-ground. (Jang). No need to solicit help of the Army to tackle law and order situation in Karachi so far. (Pakistan).

Ministry of Interior, in a report sent to the Prime Minister, has said that increase in Rangers' powers is essential to improve law and order situation in Karachi. (N. Waqt).

A Foreign Office spokesman has clarified that the Prime Minister's visit to China is not envisaged for the present. (Jang/ Nation/ Pak. Observer). Pakistan has welcomed US Senate decision to give President Clinton authority to lift the economic sanctions.(News).
