Census '98 put Pakistan's population at 130.58 million
ISLAMABAD, July 9 (APP): Finance Minister Sartaj Aziz on Wednesday announced the provisional results of National Census, 1998, putting Pakistan's total population at 130.580 million, showing an average annual growth rate of 2.61 since 1981. ""I can claim it as the most authentic, fair and transparent Census in the history of Pakistan," he said at a press conference here. He was flanked by Chief Census Commissioner Javed Akram. The Fifth Population and Housing Census 1998 was undertaken from March 2 to 18 throughout the country. About 150,000 field staff was hired from the Provincial government departments and imparted thorough training before the census operations. The total population, according to the provisional result is 130.580 million as against 84.254 million calculated in the last Census held in 1981. This shows an overall percentage increase of 54.98 over the last census, recording an average growth rate of 2.61 as against 3.06 observed during 1971-81.
Karachi most populous city
ISLAMABAD, July 9 (APP): Karachi the biggest city in Pakistan has with a total population of 9.269 million, according to the provisional results of the Census'98. Karachi is followed by Lahore with the population of 5.063 million and Faisalabad with a population of 1.977 million. These three big cities accounts for 38.4 percent of total urban population of Pakistan. The other big cities recording population of over one million are Rawalpindi with a population of 1.406 million, Multan 1.182 million, Hyderabad 1.151 million and Gujranwala 1.124 million.
