PM: The Prime Minister Mr. Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, who arrived in Abu Dhabi Saturday evening, has held talks with the President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahyan.
An official spokesman later told newsmen that the one-to-one meeting was very cordial and heart-to-heart. He said the Prime Minister had come to the UAE to personally thank Sheikh Zayed for the solidarity extended to Pakistan particularly during the recent difficult days and apprise him of the precarious situation in the region as a result of the Indian belligerency and serious threat to Pakistan.
Mr. Nawaz Sharif informed Sheikh Zayed of the BJP government's agenda which included exercise of nuclearization and weaponization.
The UAE President was also informed of the strong imbalance arising out of Indian nuclear tests particularly the serious threat to Pakistan's sovereignty. The Prime Minister said Pakistan did not act in a haste nor in a tit-for-tat manner and ensured an utmost restraint-waiting for international community to give a befitting response to the threat posed by Indian nuclear weaponization. He said unfortunately the international community's response was far from satisfactory, giving no chance to Pakistan but to conduct its own tests for safeguarding its sovereignty and integrity.
The UAE President expressed his sense of satisfaction over Pakistan's achievement and congratulated Pakistan for acquiring capability imperative for its independence and sovereignty. He showed full understanding that Pakistan was under compulsion to react to the threat posed to its security.
The Prime Minister is due to leave Abu Dhabi for Saudi Arabia Sunday.
SEMINAR: A seminar on the role of Radio in the promotion of Drama was held in Karachi Saturday evening in connection with the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of Radio Pakistan. The Advisor to the Prime Minister, Mr. Asad Ali Khan Junejo presided.
Speaking on the occasion, he said Radio Pakistan has played a pivotal role in the development of the country and the nation as a great national institution and we can be proud of it.
Earlier welcoming the guests, the Director General Pakistan Broadcasting Corporation, Khawaja Ejaz Sarwar said the present government is making efforts to revive past status of Radio.
BANK: The State Bank has allowed foreign nationals and companies to maintain foreign currency account.
According to a new circular issued Saturday modifying the previous circular of the 28th of last month, deposits and withdrawals from the foreign currency accounts have been allowed of the foreign contractors, oil and gas exploration companies, mineral companies and representatives of foreign companies working in Pakistan and meeting their operational expenses from the foreign currency brought from abroad or paid to them by the contracting public sector agencies in Pakistan.
Certain categories of exporters have also been allowed deposits and withdrawals from the foreign currency account.

PM: Prime Minister, Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, has again called upon India to join Pakistan in avoiding any arms race in the region and resolve the Kashmir dispute on the basis of Kashmiri people's right of self determination.
Addressing the joint sitting of the two Houses of the Parliament in Islamabad Saturday morning, he said India cannot hold the Kashmiris for long in subjugation and Pakistan will continue its diplomatic and moral support for the Kashmiri people.
The Prime Minister said Kashmir is the core issue in South Asia and peace cannot be secured in the region without its resolution in a just manner. Mr. Nawaz Sharif pointed out that all members of the United Nations owed responsibility to ensure implementation of UN resolutions enshrining the right of self-determination for the Kashmiri people.
He offered the Indian Prime Minister Mr. Vajpayee to resume meaningful talks with Pakistan so that the disputes between the two countries including the core issue of Kashmir, are resolved and the whole region attained prosperity.
KASHMIR: In occupied Kashmir, the Indian troops in their continuing acts of violence, carried out extensive crackdown in rural areas of Surankot in Poonch district.
Houses were ransacked and plundered. This triggered anti-India demonstration to protest against the military terrorism.
SESSION: It has been officially announced in Islamabad that the National Assembly session which was scheduled to resume on 8th of this month at 10 a.m. will now be held on 9th of this month at 10 a.m.
PM-EMERGENCY: The Prime Minister said it was an imperative of the most important historic decision that every possible precautionary measures be taken.
It was not an ordinary situation and emergency was levied under the prescribed procedures of the constitution.
It is , the Prime Minister said not against the nation and not to punishing anybody or victimising any politician. The objective of the emergency is to chase those creating economic disturbance and recover the plundered wealth.
Mr. Muhammad Nawaz Sharif assured the House that emergency would not continue to be imposed even for one day un-necessarily and would be withdrawn as soon as there would be improvement in the condition.
PARLIAMENT: The joint sitting of the two houses of parliament Saturday began discussion on resolutions about the proclamation of emergency .
The resolutions moved by the Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Mian Muhammad Yaseen Khan Wattoo, sought the approval of the parliament for proclamation of emergency.
Taking part in the discussion, Senator Aitzaz Ahsan welcomed the government's decision of conducting nuclear tests saying these were necessitated by belligerent attitude of Indian leadership. He held India responsible for pushing South Asia into an arms race.
He criticised the government for the imposition of emergency and suspension of fundamental rights . He claimed that between 500 to 600 hundred million dollars were sent abroad in a few hours of time after the nuclear tests by Pakistan.
The Finance Minister Mr. Sartaj Aziz rejected the claim of Senator Aitzaz Ahsan and said there has been a decrease of only 200 million dollars in the foreign exchange reserves of the country in the last three weeks. He said there was no leakage of information and action is being taken against bank managers found responsible for transferring foreign exchange.
Syeda Abida Hussain, Minister for Population Welfare said in this hour of need there was need for national unity. She said the Prime Minister took a decision at a most suitable time in a dignified way for the nuclear tests.
Mr. Asfandyar Wali was critical of emergency and suspension of fundamental rights.
Hafiz Fazal Muhammad had taken the floor when the joint sitting was adjourned to meet again on Monday morning at 10 a.m.
Earlier, opposition parties PPP, ANP, JUI and BNA (Hayee Group) staged a token walk out from the house to protest against taking up for discussion on two resolutions.
DEPARTURE: The Prime Minister Mr. Muhammad Nawaz Sharif left Islamabad Saturday afternoon on a two day visit to the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
Talking to newsmen at the airport before his departure, he said he would exchange views with the UAE and Saudi leaders on regional and international matters of mutual interest. This is part of regular consultations Pakistan has been maintaining with brotherly and friendly countries.
He said that he would brief the leaders of the two brotherly countries on the situation obtaining now following exercise by Pakistan of its nuclear option to restore military balance in South Asia.
SPOKESMAN: Pakistan has urged the international community to engage itself along with India and Pakistan in finding a solution to the problems which have made the South Asian region a flash point.
Answering question by newsmen at a briefing in Islamabad Saturday, a Foreign Office spokesman said after the nuclear tests by India and Pakistan, the need is felt ever more for a dialogue to come to the conclusion with the root cause of tension and conflict in the region, the issue of Kashmir. He said until a solution is found to this issue, expeditiously tension will not go away.
Replying to a question he said Pakistan is a responsible country and there was no question of transfer of nuclear technology to any country.
About Pak-US relations, the spokesman said the two countries enjoy very good and friendly relations and Pakistan is willing to cooperate with them. He said President Clinton's visit is expected to take place as scheduled.
The spokesman said the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Mr. Muhammad Siddique Khan Kanju has visited Afghanistan to express Pakistan's sympathies with Afghan leaders over the earthquake devastation.
PRESIDENT: President Muhammad Rafiq Tarar has said Pakistan's armed forces are fully ready to face any challenges .
He was talking to Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Mr. Khurshid Zaman , MNA, in Islamabad Saturday. They discussed the issues confronting the nation.
