NEWS IN DETAIL:

The prime minister Mr. Mohammad nawaz sharif has said that national consensus which emerged on the eve of pakistan's testing of nuclear devices recently augurs well for the country's future. It is the source of strength for the whole nation.He was presiding over a high level meeting at the prime minister's house today to discuss the national agenda in the post-may-28 changed scenario to cope with the challenges that lay ahead. He said that the nation demonstrated a rare sense of unity and solidarity in one of the most crucial periods of its history. It has the resilience and inherent potential to pursue its goals steadfastly even in the most difficult and trying circumstances, he added. The meeting discussed a number of proposals relating to the national agenda. They included, measures to promote austerity in all walks of national life, Self-reliance, strengthen national economy, improve tax collection and revenue generation and to ensure speedy justice to the people. The meeting was attended among others by the minister for finance, senator sartaj aziz, minister for commerce, mr.ishaq dar, minister for law and justice, mr. Khalid anwar, minister for labour, sheikh rasheed ahmed, minister for information and media development, mushahid hussain syed, co-ordinator of the programme 2010, Mr. Ahsan iqbal, deputy chairman planning commission, dr. Hafeez pasha, dr. Mahboobul haq, Chairman cbr besides other senior government officials.

Foreign ministers of the five permanent members of the un security council are meeting in geneva today to discuss arms race in south asia with particular reference to the kashmir dispute. The ministers were expected to hold one-to-one meeting before their session in the european headquarters of the united nations. Officials in beijing have said that chinese foreign minister teng jiaxuan who is chairing the meeting will try to stop the arms race between china and its neighbours which could encourage other countries to obtain nuclear weapons. Meanwhile, the british foreign secretary Mr. Robin cook who is also attending the conference at geneva, in an earlier statement in the house of commons indicated that pressure would be built for the resolution of kashmir issue. Britain has called a meeting of g-8 foreign ministers after the geneva conference.

United states president Bill Clinton has said washington's goal was to 'forge a common strategy to move india and pakistan back from their nuclear arms race'. President clinton was speaking to reporters at the white house after conferring with secretary of state madeleine albright before she attended a meeting about the reaction to the recent nuclear testes. Clinton said the international community must come together to reverse the course taken by the two neighbouring asian countries. He was speaking alongside madeleine albright, who left to attend the meeting of the major powers in geneva later today. Albright said last months's tit-for-tat nuclear tests, which catapulted the two states into a new status as nuclear powers, had undermined their own security. The geneva meeting will also be attended by britain, china, france and russia.

A foreign office spokesman in islamabad commenting on various reports and statements including those from foreign countries said, pakistan's nuclear capability is for Self-defence. The whole world has acknowledged that indian are aggressors and pakistan is a grieved party. The spokesman added, pakistan only reacted in view of the grave threat to its security. He reiterated, pakistan has no aggressive designs against anybody and clarified that there is also no question of any transfer of nuclear technology to any third country or entity.

A meeting of parliamentary party of pakistan muslim league and its allied parties in the national assembly and senate will be held in islamabad tomorrow at 3.30 pm. Prime minster, mr.muhammad nawaz sharif will chair the meeting. And the foreign minister of france has said his government is currently engaged in high level diplomatic efforts aimed at finding a solution of the kashmir problem. Addressing the national assembly in paris he said an indian representative had a meeting with president chirac and he himself have meetings with ambassadors of india and pakistan.

The french foreign minister said various issues alongwith kashmir is being discussed for confidence building.

In occupied Kashmir, total strike was observed today. The call of strike was given by all parties hurriyat conference. It aims to impress upon the five permanent member countries of the security council that settlement of the kashmir issue was imperative in view of nuclear threat, hovering over south asia. Normal life was paralysed by the strike with bazars, business centres, government and semi-government offices, banks and education institutions remaining closed and transport off the road.

The chairman aphc, syed ali gilani has sent letters to the u.n. secretary general, heads of governments of the five permanent members of the security council and those of the g-8 countries to the urgency of speedy solution of the kashmir issue. Meanwhile, protest demonstrations were held in srinagar, sopore and pulwama against military repression. Several people including some security forces personnel were injured, when a big anti-india procession in srinagar was subjected to brute force. About a dozen youngmen were arrested. Line of control in azad kashmir has been subject to heavy firing from indian army in the recent days. A large number of people have been killed and wounded as a result of unprovoked indian firing across the line of control. Foreign media now in pakistan yesterday visited chokhti town near the line of control in Azad Kashmir.
