NATO Press Release
30 May 1998
STATEMENT BY NATO SECRETARY GENERAL, DR. JAVIER SOLANA, ON THE NEW
NUCLEAR TESTS BY PAKISTAN
The Secretary General of NATO, Dr. Javier Solana, condemns the two
further nuclear tests that were carried out by Pakistan this morning.
The nuclear tests of India and Pakistan undermine the global efforts
to counter proliferation and pose a grave risk to stability in South
Asia. The Secretary General renews his call on both India and Pakistan
to halt nuclear and missile testing immediately, to adhere to the
Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty
(CTBT) without conditions and to begin a dialogue in order to reduce
tensions in the region.
