TEXT: SOLANA CONDEMNS TWO FURTHER NUCLEAR TESTS BY PAKISTAN
(Calls on both India and Pakistan to halt tests) (180) Brussels -- Javier Solana, secretary general of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), condemned the two further nuclear tests carried out by Pakistan May 30, and called on both India and Pakistan to halt their nuclear tests. Following is the text of Solana's May 30 statement: (Begin text) NATO Press Release 30 May 1998 STATEMENT BY NATO SECRETARY GENERAL, DR. JAVIER SOLANA, ON THE NEW NUCLEAR TESTS BY PAKISTAN The Secretary General of NATO, Dr. Javier Solana, condemns the two further nuclear tests that were carried out by Pakistan this morning. The nuclear tests of India and Pakistan undermine the global efforts to counter proliferation and pose a grave risk to stability in South Asia. The Secretary General renews his call on both India and Pakistan to halt nuclear and missile testing immediately, to adhere to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) without conditions and to begin a dialogue in order to reduce tensions in the region.
