(Albright will meet with the PermFive in Geneva June 4) (250) Washington -- State Department Spokesman James Rubin says Secretary Albright will join Foreign Ministers of the UN Security Council's five permanent members to discuss the situation in South Asia on June 4 in Geneva. "The immediate focus of the meeting," Rubin said, "will be to consider ways to reduce India-Pakistan tensions, which have risen significantly with the tests of nuclear weapons by both countries, and to reinforce the goals of the global nonproliferation regime." RUBIN, SPOKESMAN INDIA-PAKISTAN: PERM-5 MEETlNG On June 4 in Geneva, Secretary Albright will join Foreign Ministers of the Security Council's five permanent members to discuss the situation in South Asia. The immediate focus of the meeting will be to consider ways to reduce India-Pakistan tensions, which have risen significantly with the tests of nuclear weapons by both countries, and to reinforce the goals of the global nonproliferation regime. The meeting will also be examining ways in which the international community can help bring greater stability and security to South Asia, including steps that can be taken to encourage dialogue and reconciliation between India and Pakistan. The P-5 will be discussing additional follow-on multilateral meetings involving other interested countries. (end text)
