TEXT: STATE DEPT. SPOKESMAN ON PAKISTAN'S MAY 30 NUCLEAR TEST
(The US "condemns this second round of nuclear tests") (210) Washington -- State Department Spokesman James Rubin said May 30 that "The US condemns this second round of nuclear tests by Pakistan. "This second test," Rubin said, "can only further raise tensions in South Asia and undermine the global consensus on nonproliferation. We are very disappointed that Pakistan continues to ignore the calls to exercise restraint that were made by the international community after its first tests." Following is the State Department text: (begin text) U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE Office of Press Relations May 30, 1998 STATEMENT BY JAMES P. RUBIN, SPOKESMAN Pakistan: Second Nuclear Test The US condemns this second round of nuclear tests by Pakistan. This second test can only further raise tensions in South Asia and undermine the global consensus on nonproliferation. We are very disappointed that Pakistan continues to ignore the calls to exercise restraint that were made by the international community after its first tests. We again urge both Pakistan and India to cease and desist from any further nuclear or missile tests, or any other provocative action or rhetoric. This action by Pakistan will further set back our continuing efforts to defuse tensions and halt the spiraling cycle of provocative action. (end text)
