(Withdraws his bill to repeal the Pressler Amendment) (240) Washington -- U.S. Senator Sam Brownback (Republican, Kansas), Chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Near Eastern and South Asian Affairs, said May 28 that he is "gravely disappointed" by Pakistan's nuclear weapons tests. Brownback announced that today (May 28) he is withdrawing his bill to repeal the Pressler Amendment to the Foreign Assistance Act, which he originally introduced to alleviate Pakistan's security concerns following India's nuclear testing earlier this month. Following is the text of a press release on Brownback's remarks: (Begin text) WASHINGTON -- U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback, Chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Near Eastern and South Asian Affairs, said he is gravely disappointed by today's nuclear weapons tests in Pakistan. "This marks a dangerous chain-reaction that has to be stopped," Brownback said. "I am gravely disappointed by today's events in Pakistan. The Pakistani government's decision to test nuclear devices seriously erodes regional stability in South Asia. "Today I am withdrawing my bill to repeal the Pressler Amendment to the Foreign Assistance Act. I originally introduced this bill to alleviate Pakistan's security concerns following India's nuclear testing earlier this month. "I strongly urge India and Pakistan to remain calm at this critical time. They must not let current tensions spill over into long-standing flash-points between them, particularly the situation in Kashmir," Brownback said. (End text)
