
Backgrounder: additional sanctions for Myanmar

Backgrounder
Effective immediately, Canada is imposing sanctions against the following individuals and entities for undermining the peace, security and stability of the country and contributing to gross human rights violations.
In light of the ongoing crisis in Myanmar, the Special Economic Measures (Myanmar) Regulations have been amended to allow Canada to impose sanctions more effectively in cases of grave breaches of international peace and security, gross and systematic human rights violations and significant acts of corruption.
Canadian measures
The Special Economic Measures (Myanmar) Regulations impose on listed persons a prohibition on any transaction (effectively, an asset freeze) by prohibiting persons in Canada and Canadians outside Canada from engaging in any activity related to any property of these listed persons or providing financial or related services to them. The listed individuals are also rendered inadmissible to Canada under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act.
The specific prohibitions are set out in the regulations.
Targeted individuals are senior government officials in Myanmar responsible for undermining the peace, security and stability of the country and contributing to gross human rights violations.
