Teacher, other villagers lead arson attack on Kachin village
Nearly 400 houses, school in Tar Ma Hkan village state burned to the ground.
By RFA Burmese 2024.04.10 -- A female middle school teacher and other villagers who supported the Myanmar junta led troops and pro-junta militia in an arson attack on a Kachin state village that destroyed nearly 400 houses.
"They set fire to every house along the main street of the village," a woman wrote about the March 3 attack on Tar Ma Hkan village in a message to RFA. In addition to the homes, the village school and a monastery were destroyed.
Another woman who lost her home in the attack told RFA, "She worked as a school teacher in the village for almost 30 years. She used to be a supporter of the military. I don't know why she led pro-junta militias to burn down the homes. As my own teacher since I was young, I couldn't help but be surprised."
The teacher was later killed in fighting between a joint unit of Kachin Independence Army and People's Defense Force fighters and junta troops, the woman said.
