Today a military court in Myanmar has sentenced detained State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi to an additional three years' imprisonment. The EU's position, as expressed on 6 December 2021, 11 January 2022 and 27 April 2022, remains that her trials are purely politically motivated. Three former ministers in her government were also sentenced: two former ministers of planning and finance, Kyaw Win and Soe Win, and deputy minister Set Aung.
These proceedings are a clear attempt to exclude democratically elected leaders, including Aung San Suu Kyi and the National League for Democracy, from the inclusive dialogue process called for by ASEAN's Five-Point Consensus. Only a genuine dialogue involving her, the National League for Democracy, the National Unity Government and civil society and others in Myanmar can offer any way out of the current crisis.
Aung San Suu Kyi now faces 23 years in prison, including three years of hard labour, while still facing further bogus charges, the true objective of which is entirely clear.
We reiterate our urgent call for the immediate and unconditional release of all political prisoners as well as all those arbitrarily detained since the coup.
