February 3, 2022
The following is attributable to Spokesperson Ned Price:
Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken met virtually today with activists from Burma to hear of their efforts to return to their country's democratic path in the face of brutal violence perpetrated by the Burmese military since the coup d'état one year ago. The Secretary again committed to continue our work with the people of Burma to protect their human rights, provide humanitarian assistance, and support an inclusive and representative pro-democracy movement. He shared diplomatic and economic actions the U.S. government is taking to resolve the crisis in Burma, including imposing targeted sanctions to apply pressure on the regime to end its human rights violations and abuses, release all those unjustly detained, and return Burma to its path to democracy. The Secretary noted the military's atrocities and underscored the urgency of holding those responsible accountable.
