Myanmar's main opposition has called for a re-run of the parliamentary elections under the supervision of the military amid Aung San Suu Kyi's ruling party victory in what has been called "unfair" polls.

The military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) said in a statement on Wednesday, "We reject the election because it was unfair."

The opposition alleges there have been a remarkable number of ineligible people who had cast ballots.

"We call on the election commission to hold a new, disciplined election in cooperation with the military as soon as possible."

Several dozen supporters of the USDP also demonstrated in the capital Naypyitaw on Wednesday, demanding a new and fair election.

The Union Election Commission (UEC) rebuffed the claims, saying the elections were transparent and "conducted fairly, within the law."

The ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) party won 130 of the 158 declared seats in the bicameral legislature compared with 15 for the USDP.

The NLD needs 322 seats to form the next government. The Sunday elections are the second since the country emerged from almost 50 years of strict military rule in 2011.

The reputation of Suu Kyi's government, which is popular at home, lies shattered abroad due to accusations of 'genocide' against the Rohingya Muslim minority.

Observers said the vote went smoothly on Sunday, but criticized the lack of transparency, widespread disenfranchisement and coronavirus restrictions they said benefited the NLD.
