Germany still sceptical on military action in Libya after UN vote

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Berlin, March 18, IRNA -- German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle on Friday reiterated his country was 'still extremely sceptical' on a western military intervention in Libya only hours after the UN Security Council passed a resolution which authorized the use of force.

In a statement, Westerwelle pointed to 'substantial risks and dangers' in case of a western military action in that north African country.

The minister made clear that German soldiers would not take part in the military mission in Libya.

A non-permanent member in the UN Security Council, Germany was among five countries to abstain in the council vote on Libya.

Berlin had repeatedly warned of a protracted military conflict in the Arab country.

In other related news, the European Union welcomed the no-fly authorization against Libya by the UN Security Council as a 'clear legal basis' for members of the international community to 'provide protection to the civilian population.'

The EU statement was issued jointly by European Council President Herman Van Rompuy and the EU commissioner for foreign affairs, Catherine Ashton just hours after the resolution passed late Thursday in New York.
