Press release on the mandate renewal for the UN Support Mission in Libya

On January 31, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2619 on technically extending the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) until April 30 of this year.
We consistently emphasise the importance of the role of the UN and specifically the UNSMIL in promoting a comprehensive and peaceful settlement in the Libyan crisis. However, the UN mission continues without a functioning head as approved by the UN Security Council at this critical stage of settlement, and this weakens the mediation potential, authority and efficiency of UN efforts. We intend to continue the search for mutually acceptable solutions to the outstanding issues of UNSMIL leadership with a view to ensuring fully functioning conformity with the mandate as confirmed by the relevant UN resolutions. We expect the UN Secretary-General to nominate a befitting candidate for the head of this mission as soon as possible.
In principle, we do not see any alternative to the peaceful settlement of the Libyan crisis. We believe progress on the road to long-term political settlement can only be reached by ensuring inclusivity that includes all the influential forces in the country.
