Dutch government releases two billion euros of Libya's assets

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Berlin, Sept 1, IRNA -- Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte on Thursday released two billion euros worth of Libyan assets, frozen when fugitive Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi began his brutal crackdown of the country's protest movement, according to Dutch press reports.

Releasing the cash is crucial for getting Libya's economy back on track, said Rutte ahead of a key conference in Paris on Libya's political future.

The Netherlands joined several other NATO countries, among them the US, France and Britain, in unfreezing Libyan cash.

Billions of euros of Libyan money are reportedly stashed in western European banks.

The issue of Libya's frozen assets was expected to be the center stage at Thursday evening's Friends of Libya conference, to be co-hosted by French President Nicolas Sarkozy and British Prime Minister David Cameron.

Delegations from around 60 countries and international organizations are taking part in the meeting, where the Libyan Transitional Council (TNC) will spell out its needs for support in the political and economic reconstruction of their country.
