Sudan recognizes Libya's rebel council
13:56 25/08/2011 KHARTOUM, August 25 (RIA Novosti) - Sudan has recognized the National Transitional Council of Libya as the North African state's sole legitimate government, a Sudanese Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Thursday.
"Sudan will establish relations with the Libyan transitional council," spokesman Al-Obaid Marawih said.
A number of other African states, including Egypt, Chad and Ethiopia, have also recognized the NTC.
The rebels announced that they had gained control of much of the Libyan capital on Tuesday, but Gaddafi's whereabouts are still unknown.
The uprising against Gaddafi's forty-year rule began in February. An international military operation "to protect civilians" in Libya began on March 19 following a UN resolution.
