Qaddafi Makes Brief TV Appearance After Weeks Of Absence
May 12, 2011
After weeks of absence, Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi has made a brief appearance on state television.
Qaddafi was shown in what Libyan TV said was a meeting on May 11 with tribal leaders, which was apparently filmed at a Tripoli hotel.
Qaddafi has not been seen or heard since an April 30 NATO airstrike on his Tripoli compound.
Hours after the broadcast, explosions were heard in central Tripoli in another suspected NATO airstrike.
Earlier, Libyan rebels said they have taken control of Misurata airport in heavy fighting with Qaddafi's forces.
In Geneva, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon called for "an immediate, verifiable cease-fire" in Libya, and said Qaddafi's government had agreed to another visit by a special envoy.
