Berlin expels Libyan diplomats

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Berlin, April 13, IRNA -- The German foreign ministry is expelling five Libyan diplomats for exerting pressure on the Libyan exile community.

The foreign ministry summoned on Wednesday the Libyan ambassador to inform him that the five diplomats had to leave Germany within seven days.

The ministry did not provide any details of the pressure they had exerted on the Libyan exiles or when it took place.

The latest developments come in the wake of an earlier conviction of a non-diplomatic employee of the embassy for spying on Libyan exiles.

German authorities were quoted saying Libya's diplomatic mission in Berlin had attempted to intimidate the Libyan exile community.

The Libyan embassy, located in Berlin's upscale district of Dahlem, has been attacked twice by anti-Qadhafi protesters in recent weeks and has also been the scene of numerous demonstrations against the regime of Libyan dictator Colonel Moammar Qadhafi.

Germany has repeatedly made clear there could be no political future for Qadhafi in Libya.
