- Kazakhstan's Nuclear Status and Regional Security Saideh Lotfian Amu Darya Vol. 1, No. 2 Summer & Fall 1996 -- Subsequent to its independence, this Central Asian country found itself owner of 104 MIRVs with over 1200 nuclear warheads, 40 Tu-95 M jet fighters equipped with 320 cruise missiles. Fifty of the SS-18 multiple-warhead ballistic missiles, each capable of carrying ten warheads, were deployed at Imen Gastello; while fifty others were deployed at Zhangiz Toba. Kazakhstan succeeded to de-nuclearize itself within a relatively short span of time.
