Foreign Minister IWAYA's Attendance at Working Breakfast on Security Council Reform Hosted by Mr. Barrot, Foreign Minister of the French Republic

On September 23, commencing at 8:30 a.m. local time (9:30 p.m. JST), Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who is visiting New York, attended a working breakfast on Security Council reform hosted by H.E. Mr. Jean Noël Barrot, Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs of the French Republic. The overview of the meeting is as follows:

  1. At the beginning of the meeting, Minister Barrot highlighted the significance of France, as a permanent member of the Security Council, taking action toward the realization of Security Council reform.
  2. Minister IWAYA emphasized that Security Council reform is urgent and underscored the need to expand both permanent and non-permanent membership categories. Minister IWAYA also stressed the importance of addressing historical injustices against Africa and ensuring adequate consideration for small and medium size UN Member States, including Small Island Developing States (SIDS).
  3. Furthermore, other participants, including the other G4 countries (excluding Japan: Brazil, Germany and India), African countries, and SIDS countries, made statements on the future direction of Security Council reform.
  4. Minister IWAYA's participation demonstrated Japan's unwavering commitment to Security Council reform and provided an opportunity to further strengthen close coordination with relevant countries, including the host country, France.
