
Japan-Saudi Arabia Foreign Ministers' Telephone Talk

On September 2, commencing at 11:00 a.m. local time (5:00 p.m. JST) for approximately 35 minutes, Mr. IWAYA Takeshi, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Japan, who was visiting the State of Kuwait to attend the Japan-GCC Foreign Ministers' Meeting and other events, held a telephone talk with H.H. Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al-Saud, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, who was unable to attend the meeting due to urgent duties. The overview of the talk is as follows:
- At the outset, Minister Faisal stated that, due to urgent duties, he was unable to visit Kuwait and attend the Japan-GCC Foreign Ministers' Meeting but expressed his desire to take this opportunity to exchange views between the two ministers.
- Minister IWAYA expressed his pleasure at the active high-level exchanges between the two countries on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations this year and stated his intention to continue close communication. In response, Foreign Minister Faisal stated that the two foreign ministers had meaningful exchanges of views during their two meetings earlier this year on bilateral relations and regional affairs and expressed his satisfaction with the ongoing close communication between them.
- The two ministers held a candid exchange of views on recent regional developments, including Iran, Gaza, and Syria.
- On Iran, Minister IWAYA noted the importance of the Gulf countries' calls for restraint and dialogue by both parties during the exchange of attacks between Israel and Iran in June of this year. He also stated that Japan would continue its diplomatic efforts toward a peaceful resolution of the Iranian nuclear issue through dialogue. In response, Minister Faisal stated that both countries share the same position of seeking a peaceful solution to the Iranian nuclear issue through dialogue, welcomed Japan's proactive role in stabilizing the region, and expressed his desire to continue close cooperation.
- On the situation in Gaza, Minister IWAYA emphasized the need to address the severe humanitarian situation in Gaza and reiterated Japan's consistent support for a "Two-State Solution." In response, Minister Faisal expressed his appreciation for Japan's support for Gaza and its consistent support for the "Two-State Solution."
- On Syria, Minister IWAYA appreciated the Syrian government's stance toward a peaceful transition and stressed the importance of respecting Syria's independence and sovereignty. In response, Minister Faisal also emphasized the importance of encouraging the Syrian government's efforts toward political resolution and national reconciliation through dialogue.
- The two ministers also exchanged views on the Indo-Pacific situation.
- The two ministers concurred on continuing close communication in order to further strengthen bilateral relations and enhance cooperation in the international arena.
