Russia and China have protested the deployment of the US Army's "Typhon" missile system to Japan.
A joint US and Japanese military exercise will see the temporary deployment of the "Typhon" intermediate-range missile in Japan, Japanese and US officials said on Thursday.
The United States said it decided to use the "Typhon" intermediate-range missile system in the exercise after the Russian military carried out military drills in the Sea of Japan in recent days.
Both Moscow and Beijing separately rebuked Tokyo over its decision to allow the United States to deploy the "Typhon" missile system as part of joint military exercises in Japan next month, calling the move a threat to regional stability.
Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said bolstering the US military bases in Japan poses a threat to the region.
"We view this as another destabilizing step as part of Washington's course toward ramping up the potential of ground-based shorter and intermediate-range missiles," Zakharova said on Friday.
Deploying missiles "in regions near Russia poses a direct strategic threat to Russia," she added.
Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Guo Jiakun said the US and Japan should contribute to peace in the region instead of causing tensions by deployment of more weapons.
"China always opposes the United States deploying the Typhon Mid-Range Capability missile system in Asian countries," Guo said on Friday.
"We urge Japan to take a hard look at its history of aggression, follow the path of peaceful development, act prudently in military and security areas, and refrain from further losing the trust of its Asian neighbors and the international community," he added.
Guo said China also called on the military leadership in the United States to "draw lessons from history and devote more effort and resources to doing the right thing rather than the other way around."
The Typhon deployment is part of a drive by Washington to amass a variety of advanced weapons in Asia.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Japan's Ground Self Defense Force said the Typhon would be deployed to the US Marine Air Station Iwakuni as part of the "Resolute Dragon" military exercise between US and Japanese forces.
The "Resolute Dragon" exercises take place across Japan, running from September 11 to September 25. Last year, the US met with sharp criticism from China after it had deployed the Typhon missile system in the Philippines during a military exercise.
