"China has noted the result of the election. This is Japan's internal affair, and I have no particular comment," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said Monday when asked to comment on Japan's upper house election. He said that China and Japan are close neighbors, and maintaining the healthy and stable development of bilateral relations serves the fundamental interests of both countries and their peoples.
China stands ready to work with Japan to sustain dialogue and communication at all levels and across various fields, enhance political mutual trust, deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, properly manage differences, and jointly advance the China-Japan strategic relationship of mutual benefit in an all-round manner. The two sides should make concerted efforts to build a constructive and stable relationship that meets the requirements of the new era, said Guo.
Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and its junior coalition partner Komeito lost control of the Upper House in Sunday's election, marking the first time the LDP has lost a majority in both houses of parliament since the party's foundation in 1955, according to multiple media outlets.
This development is widely believed to further weaken Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba's grip on power even as he vowed to remain party leader, Reuters reported on Monday.
