Japan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have inked a nuclear cooperation agreement during a visit by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

The cooperation deal was signed in Dubai, in the presence of Abe and UAE Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashif al-Maktoum on Thursday, the state-run WAM news agency said.

Abe, who is on a regional tour aimed at selling Japanese nuclear technologies, has highlighted his country’s cooperation with its partners in the Middle East. His tour began in Saudi Arabia.

The Japanese premier arrived in the UAE late on Wednesday to participate in a Japan-UAE Business Forum as the Persian Gulf country is Tokyo’s eighth largest world economic partner.

“Japan can contribute to UAE energy supplies by means of nuclear energy conservation and renewable energy,” Abe said at the forum according to translation from Japanese.

In mid-July 2012, Abu Dhabi announced that it would start constructing two of four nuclear power plants in partnership with a South Korean consortium. The four plants are scheduled to be operational by 2020.

In September 2012, the Persian Gulf country signed a nuclear deal with Canada that allowed Ottawa to supply uranium to atomic power reactors in the UAE.
