US firm involved in Fukushima nuclear crisis: Japanese official

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tokyo, March 17, IRNA -- A Japanese media official said on Thursday that the recent crisis of Fukushima nuclear power plant due to recent devastating earthquake and 10-meter tsunamis in that country were caused by substandard reactors made by American General Elector Company.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, the Japanese official told IRNA in an exclusive interview in Tokyo that General Electric Company was fully in charge of one of six reactors of Fukushima nuclear plant while it cooperated with Japanese company Toshiba Company in manufacture of two other reactors of Fukushima nuclear power plant.

'The US is trying hard to prevent Japan from exposing the role of General Electric Company by exerting too much pressure on Japan. The US effort is aimed at preventing further pessimism on behalf of Japanese people towards US, particularly because they have a bad memory of US atomic bombardment of Japanese cities of Nagasaki and Hiroshima during the WWII,' the official added.

He pointed out that the US has been aware of the deficiencies of Fukushima nuclear reactors, but it failed to upgrade their technology over past 30 years.

'The General Electric Company has used the same defective technology in 16 other nuclear power plants across US. If a similar tragedy like the 8.9-magnitude earthquake which happened in northeastern Japan takes place in US, a similar fate like that of Japan's Fukushima nuclear power plant awaits them,' the official added.

Referring to the fact that Japan is exposed to nuclear threats for the second time by the US, he noted that when surveying the records of design and manufacture of the nuclear power plant, it became evident that a former engineer of General Electric named David Brydon had resigned 35 years ago over lack of safety in Fukushima's reactors reservoirs.
