Arab states seek to bring Israeli nuclear program under IAEA control
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Vienna, Sept 13, IRNA -- Arab states are actively pressing for bringing Israeli nuclear program under international control.
IRNA reporter in Vienna said that the Arab diplomats say they are preparing to use the meetings of the International Atomic Energy Agency beginning on Monday to pass a resolution through the IAEA member states on Israeli nuclear program.
The resolution seeks to pressure Israel into signing the U.N.'s principal counterproliferation document, the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, and to place Israeli nuclear sites under IAEA safeguards.
IAEA will hold two sets of meetings in Vienna aimed at strengthening international efforts to stanch the spread of atomic weapons.
IRNA reporter said that the Arab states move could complicate the US administration's role in nonproliferation and Middle East peace.
