Freed nuclear whistleblower calls for dismantling of Israel`s nuclear arsenal
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Al-Khalil, April 21, IRNA -- Israel on Wednesday released Mordechai Vanunu, the nuclear whistleblower who in 1986 exposed the Zionist state`s huge arsenal of nuclear weapons, after spending 12 years of solitary confinement. Speaking to reporters shortly after leaving the prison compound in Bir Sheva, Vanunu said he was "constantly maltreated" by the agents of the Israeli security services--the Mossad and Shin Beth. "They tried repeatedly to destroy me, to make me collapse, I suffered a lot because I was a Christian. If I had been a Jew, I wouldn`t have suffered that much." The former Israeli unclear technician had converted to Christianity shortly before his abduction by Mossad agents in the mid-1980s. Vanunu urged the world community to take tangible steps to dismantle the Dimona nuclear plant in southern Palestine. "My message to the world is that the Dimona nuclear reactor should be opened for inspection. The Middle East is now nuclear-free. Only Israel has a huge nuclear arsenal," said Vanunu. He vowed to continue to speak against nuclear weapons, saying "all nuclear weapons must be stopped." Vanunu said he felt he was a free man after many years of solitary confinement. However, the Zionist regime will impose crippling restrictions on him, including town arrest. Vanunu will also be prevented from leaving his home without prior permission from the police and he will be barred from approaching any foreign embassy for fear of requesting political asylum. As Vanunu left his prison, hundreds of Israeli Jews shouted "Death to Vanunu" and "Vanunu should be assassinated like Rantisi." Vanunu said he would like to leave Israel and settle in some western country. Vanunu is widely viewed as a "traitor" in Israel because he exposed Israel`s nuclear arsenal, and especially because he changed his religion and embraced Christianity. KA/260/LS/210 End
