Israel concerned about Pak`s nuke leaks
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
New Delhi, Feb 11, IRNA -- Israel said Tuesday night that it was "very concerned" by the "new information" about nuclear proliferation from Pakistan and the possibility that an organization like the Al-Qaeda could have gained access to nuclear weapons, local press reported here on Wednesday. The Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom, who arrived in India on Monday on a four-day official visit said after talks with his Indian counterpart, Yashwant Sinha: "It [nuclear proliferation] will destabilize the entire world and we should work together in order to put an end to their [terrorists] efforts to achieve [obtain] such kinds of nuclear weapons." "We believe that it is a global threat and all democracies around the world should do everything we can in order to disarm all ... those... regimes that would like to bring destruction to their enemies or their neighbors and we should do it against states, countries and organizations," Shalom said in brief remarks to the press in Sinha`s presence. Addressing a joint news conference with External Affairs Minister Yashwant Sinha, the visiting official said Israel saw India as one of the key players in the efforts toward bringing about peace in West Asia. Reiterating Israel`s resolve to combat terrorism, Shalom said his government was now involved in fashioning a political arrangement with Palestine for lasting peace in the region. To a question by an Israeli journalist at the joint press interaction, Sinha did not offer public support to the construction of a security barrier by Israel (on Palestinian territory) to curb and control the movement of the Palestinians. Sinha said: "We have dealt with this issue in the United Nations [where India has voted against the barrier along with a vast majority of nations] according to our best judgment. The only thing I`d like to tell you at this point of time is we continue to deal with this issue according to our best judgment... I have shared my views with the Deputy Prime Minister [Shalom]." "We have shared our assessment of views on developments in the Indian sub-continent as well as in West Asia. India hopes for the early return of a just, comprehensive and durable peace in the region," Sinha said. Shalom, who also met India`s Deputy Prime Minister, Lal Krishna Advani, said India had given permission to re-open the Israeli consulate in Mumbai. Shalom will call on President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Defense Minister George Fernandes on Wednesday. 2160/214 End
